About the Role
We are seeking a Product Designer to join our growing design team and create intuitive experiences for developers and QA engineers who use Primates daily. This role sits at the intersection of complex technical workflows and elegant user experience design -- you will be translating intricate testing concepts into interfaces that feel simple and empowering.
Primates' users are technical professionals who care deeply about efficiency, information density, and keyboard-driven workflows. Designing for this audience requires a nuanced understanding of developer tool conventions, the ability to present large volumes of data without overwhelming the user, and a willingness to challenge assumptions about how testing dashboards "should" look. Our most successful design work has come from spending time with real users, understanding their daily workflows, and finding creative ways to reduce friction that they have come to accept as inevitable.
You will be responsible for the end-to-end design process: conducting user research, synthesizing findings into actionable insights, creating wireframes and prototypes in Figma, collaborating with engineers during implementation, and measuring the impact of shipped designs through analytics and follow-up research. You will work on features spanning the full product surface -- from onboarding flows for new users to advanced configuration interfaces for power users managing complex testing pipelines.
Our design team currently consists of three designers and a design manager. We operate with high autonomy, with each designer owning a product area and driving the design vision for that domain. We use Figma for all design work, maintain a comprehensive design system built on atomic design principles, and conduct weekly design critiques where the entire team reviews work in progress. We believe that great design emerges from a combination of deep user empathy, rigorous craft, and healthy creative debate.
This is a hybrid role based in our New York office in the Flatiron District, with 2-3 days per week in-office. We find that design work benefits from regular in-person collaboration, particularly during the early ideation and research synthesis phases, while detailed design execution can be done effectively from anywhere.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design of key product features from concept through implementation, including user research, wireframing, prototyping, and visual design
- Conduct user research sessions (interviews, usability tests, contextual inquiries) to develop deep understanding of developer and QA engineer workflows
- Create high-fidelity prototypes and interaction specifications in Figma that clearly communicate design intent to engineering teams
- Contribute to and maintain the Primates design system, ensuring consistency across all product surfaces
- Collaborate closely with product managers to define feature requirements and prioritize design work based on user impact
- Partner with frontend engineers during implementation to ensure design fidelity and resolve edge cases
- Analyze product usage data and user feedback to identify opportunities for UX improvement and measure the impact of design changes
- Participate in weekly design critiques and contribute constructive feedback to fellow designers
Requirements
Required
- 5+ years of product design experience, with at least 2 years designing for developer tools, enterprise SaaS, or data-intensive applications
- Strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design work on complex, information-rich interfaces
- Expert proficiency in Figma, including component architecture, auto layout, and prototyping capabilities
- Experience conducting and synthesizing user research (qualitative and quantitative methods)
- Solid understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, React) and the ability to communicate effectively with engineers
- Strong systems thinking -- the ability to design cohesive experiences across multiple features and user journeys
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for articulating design rationale to stakeholders
Preferred
- Experience designing for technical audiences (developers, DevOps engineers, data scientists)
- Familiarity with CI/CD concepts, testing methodologies, or software development workflows
- Experience building and maintaining design systems at scale
- Background in data visualization design or complex dashboard interfaces
- Experience with accessibility-first design practices and WCAG compliance
Benefits
- Competitive salary range of $130,000 - $180,000 plus equity (0.03% - 0.10% based on experience)

- Unlimited PTO with a minimum of 15 days encouraged, plus 10 company holidays
- Annual learning and development budget of $3,000 for conferences, courses, and design workshops
- Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other design tool subscriptions provided
- Home office setup stipend of $2,000 for new hires
- Commuter benefits for public transit in the New York area
- 12 weeks paid parental leave for all new parents
